Strangles (Equine Distemper) Local Name “ Kanar”

An acute disease of horses characterized by inflammation of upper respiratory tract and obsessation in the adjacent lymph nodes.

 CAUSE

A bacterial disease caused by Streptococcus equi.

 SYMPTOMS

Highly contagious disease that affects young horses. Acute onset of fever, anorexia, depression, inflammation of sub-mandibular and pharyngeal lymph nodes with abscessation and rupture, copious purulent nasal discharge with pharyngitis and laryngitis , soft moist cough. Head may be extended to ease pain in throat.

 TREATMENT

Parenteral administration of suitable antibiotics. Systemic administration of penicillin. Local treatment of abscesses. General treatment includes providing good warm shelter, soft palatable diet, keeping nostril and muzzle clean. Steam inhalation if possible.

 CONTROL

Immediately isolate the infected animal. Stables should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, bedding should be burnt.
