Biography

Dr Haroon Akbar is currently working as a Tenured Professor in the Department of Parasitology. He graduated as a veterinarian from College of Veterinary Sciences, Lahore in 2001 with a distinction. He earned a state of the art experience in clinical and extension services while working for about two and a half years in the equine practice in Brooke Hospital for Animals. He has treated a great number of equines at outdoor and indoor clinics while working in the equine practice. He has also provided extension services to the animal owners and other stake holders involved in this profession. In 2004 he was selected as a Lecturer in Department of Parasitology. Through an HEC award in 2006, he went to France where he remained a full time researcher in highly advanced french laboratories for more than five years. He earned his Masters and Doctorate degrees during his stay in France. He was awarded with the best grade for a PhD in France i.e. Very honorable with congratulations (Très honorable avec félicitations). He has also won the best oral presentation award while presenting his PhD work in France. He has also been to United States of America, Indonesia, Mexico and Holland for advanced trainings in the disease control, the diagnostics and knowledge sharing with scientific communities. He can communicate in English, French, Urdu and Punjabi, and knows the basics of Arab.
He is also an HEC approved supervisor.
Teaching and Research activities are his passion and is profoundly involved in the teaching of:
Undergraduate courses of Parasitology to the students of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, BS Applied Microbiology and BS Biological Sciences
Postgraduate courses of Parasitology to the postgraduate students of Master and PhD Parasitology
He is actively involved in the research activities focused on real challenges being faced by the stakeholders of livestock industry. Different research projects have been completed and some projects are ongoing and some are in review process. He has supervised more than 20 students of MPhil and is currently supervising 12 more students of M. Phil and PhD in the discipline of Parasitology, according to HEC policy. He is also a major and minor member of supervisory committees of many postgraduate students of Parasitology and other disciplines of the veterinary faculty, respectively, some of whom have completed PhD as well as MPhil degrees.

  8. Developed Strategy for the Treatment and Control of Ticks on 01-August, 2016 in the Punjab province in liaison with the Livestock and Dairy Development Department of the Punjab, particularly to contain CCHF i.e. Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (Summer 2016).
  9. Developed Strategy for the Treatment and Control of Warble Fly Infestation on 12-July, 2016 (Summer 2016) in the Punjab province in liaison with the Livestock and Dairy Development Department of the Punjab. The implementation of the strategy by Livestock and Dairy Development Department, resulted into about 80% control of warble fly infections at the end of current year.
  10. Investigation on the “Health Status of the Rejected A Category Male Buffalo Calves and Their Dams” at their respective centres of origin. For this purpose, different farms were critically examined and data about the feeding of calves and their dams was collected and analyzed. In addition, the blood and fecal samples of calves and their dams were collected and examined. The report was submitted to Mr Secretary, Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Lahore. Farms visited were Livestock Production Research Institute, Bahadurnagar, Okara (11-May-2016); Livestock Experiment Station, Rukh Bhuneki (26-May-2016); Livestock Experiment Station Rukh Ghulaman (01-June-2016); Livestock Experiment Station Khushab (02-June-2016).
  11. Investigative Visit to Mandi Faizabad about the Complaint of Vaccine Failure in Bovines Screening of Bovines (Buffaloes and Cattle) for blood- and GIT-parasites.
