Introduction
Initially the Lab started with the processing /
analysis of less than 500 samples in 1998 that raised upto 5000 samples
in one year after the establishment of University of Veterinary and
Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore since June 8, 2002. The number of cases
multiplied day by day and now has been raised to over 12000 upto
December, 2007 per year.
University Diagnostic Lab has got almost all those diagnostic facilities
requisite for routine monitoring of the livestock herds, poultry flocks,
farms, hatcheries, and feed mills to formulate preventive measures for
avoiding possible mortality losses of their animals in particular and
economical losses to the industry in general. Besides conventional
microbiological, serological, coprological, hematological tests and
postmortem examinations, many new modern diagnostic facilities like
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for various diseases have been
optimized. The diagnostic facilities at UDL were strengthened by the
project of about 40 million funding from Higher Education Commission for
early / accurate diagnosis and for advanced research in veterinary
diagnostics
Aims & Objectives
An early diagnosis usually leads to accurate and
successful treatment of the diseased animal. With this objective in mind
University Diagnostic Lab is serving the nation by rendering diagnostic
services to the livestock and poultry farmers and also to the pet
owners. University Diagnostic Lab has got almost all those diagnostic
facilities requisite for routine monitoring of the livestock herds,
poultry flocks, farms, hatcheries, and feed mills to formulate
preventive measures to avoid losses owing to possible morbidity and
mortality of their animals in particular and economical losses to the
industry in general. Besides conventional microbiological, serological,
coprological, hematological tests and postmortem examinations, many new
diagnostic facilities are introduced for the confirmation of all those
diseases of livestock and poultry, which are economically devastating to
the stakeholders of our country. Keeping in view the deficient areas and
constraints of the sector, UDL is planning to work on four new upcoming
areas viz. HRD (Degree programs, Diploma courses and short trainings in
lab diagnostic techniques), Helpline (to guide the farmers, stakeholders
and pet owners), Research and Development (developments of kits and
reagents that are used in different diagnostic tests), Disease warning
and quality assurance (season based early disease warning system) and
diseases of fish and wild animals. Pride of serving many national and
international organizations that platform for developing linkages and
MOUs between UVAS and these institutes.
Facilities Available
University Diagnostic Lab has got almost all those
diagnostic facilities requisite for routine monitoring of the livestock
herds, poultry flocks, farms, hatcheries, and feed mills to formulate
preventive measures for avoiding possible mortality losses of their
animals in particular and economical losses to the industry in general.
In the above-mentioned context UDL is providing high quality diagnostic
services to the farmers at very nominal rates (list appended in
advertisement section), which are almost 100 per cent less than the
rates charged by privately owned diagnostic labs. Moreover, growth and
success of the UDL can be observed from the trust shown by our clients
whereas, dedication, devotion and commitment of its staff can be
ascertained by the fact that the lab processed not more than 1000
samples per annum for the initial five years(1998-2002) but after the
establishment of UVAS, has processed over 5000 samples in year 2003
only. Presently this number has crossed the figure of 10000 samples per
annum.
Besides conventional microbiological, serological, carpological,
hematological tests and postmortem examinations, many new diagnostic
facilities including PCR based molecular biology tests are going to be
introduced in the near future for the confirmation of all those diseases
of livestock and poultry, which are economically devastating to the
stakeholders of our country.

IMPLEMENTATION OF ISO / IEC 17025
ISO (International
Organization for Standardization) and IEC (International
Electro-technical Commission) form the specialized system
for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are
members of ISO or IEC participate in the development of
international standard through technical committees
established by respective organization to deal with
particular fields of technical activity. ISO / IEC 17025 is
an international standard developed by CASCO (ISO Committee
on Conformity Assessment) and was approved by both bodies
ISO and IEC, so called ISO / IEC 17025.
Implementation of ISO / IEC 17025 at UDL
UDL is testing and disease
diagnostic lab and aims to achieve international level quality
in testing, at present the Lab is performing its test at 95% of
Confidence level. In future it will raise its quality up to 99%
of Confidence. More than thirty tests are in the scope of
accreditation. To achieve 99% confidence level and conformity of
competence the authorities of this Lab decided to implement Lab
Management System (ISO / IEC 17025).
Implementation of this standard in the UDL is in process since
August 2006. This activity started with the 1st level training
of UDL staff to develop awareness toward this standard and now
is in last phase of pre-assessment and final accreditation. UDL
applied for accreditation to Pakistan National Accreditation
Council (PNAC), Islamabad. Initial assessment in this regard has
been done by the PNAC and full assessment is expected in mid of
2008.
