Department of Anatomy & Histology

  Introduction

Veterinary anatomy is the basic science to study the form, structure and function of animal’s body. Originally the term "anatomia" derives from the Greek ana, meaning "apart", and the tome, meaning "cut".
Students gain an anatomical knowledge of the cadaver specimen through dissection, palpation and observation with the naked eye. The objective of the basic veterinary anatomy is to get a clear understanding of the normal structure of the body with a dog, sheep or goat. The comparative veterinary anatomy treats systemically the major domestic species such as horse, ox, dog, goat and chicken etc. We are demonstrating this course with systematic and regional anatomical methods.
System-oriented anatomy deals with the structure of groups of organs that are closely related to a common function, for example, the digestive system, the circulatory system, and the respiratory system e.t.c.
Regional anatomy is one of the foundations of clinical practice focused on the relationships within special regions of the body. This course is mainly practically oriented. The overall objectives of the department are:

  1. Strengthening of existing laboratory facilities through up gradation of equipment and allied components.

  2. Technical support to D.V.M. students in the Department.

  3. Developing close liaison with sister universities and other institutes by providing histological slides and articulated skeletons and chemically treated loose bones of different animals allocated in the prescribed curriculum.

  4. To promote the importance of anatomy and histology and to encourage the young researchers in the field of anatomy & histology.

  5. To support university and departmental goals by providing the highest possible level of professional and graduate veterinary medical education, resident training, and clinical service in the disciplines of anatomy, histology, radiology, surgery, and reproduction, to develop quality basic and clinical research efforts that are applicable to these fields; and, to provide outstanding veterinary services and extension efforts to the citizens of Pakistan.

   Applied Anatomy Group (AAG)

The planned activities of the group shall involve both the under- and postgraduate students. A few of the diverse activities that we plan to carry out are as follows.

  • Applied/surface/clinical anatomy of various organs will be discussed with/among students. It will include surgical case studies also, where the related anatomical structures will be discussed.

  • Tutorials about the surface anatomy of various species.

  • Short courses concerning the species/concepts not adequately addressed in the current undergraduate anatomy courses.

  • Refresher courses/classes of gross/applied anatomy for the students towards the end of their degree or to the graduates preparing for competitive exams/interviews.

  • Post-graduate students will share their intended projects. If those PG students are already in the middle of their work, they may use this platform for discussing the progress made in their work.

  • Issues regarding synopsis and thesis write-up, plagiarism, use of various search engines and software e.g. end note will be discussed with/among students.

  • Group members will present/explain the anatomical concepts/questions that intrigued them most.

  • Recent research trends in the field of Anatomy and Histology will be discussed

  • The group will host “Statistical Ambulance” where statistical problems regarding the research data of post-graduate students will be addressed.

  • Students interested in joining the group may kindly register at aag@uvas.edu.pk Communication regarding schedule of meetings/activities are made through group email.
