With the inception of University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore in 2002, the Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife was established in 2002 to strengthen and diversify the DVM degree program.
The vision of the Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife is to be a center of academic excellence in aquaculture, conservation ecology, and fisheries and wildlife by providing quality programs in teaching, research, and outreach that will enhance fisheries and wildlife resource management at local, national, and international levels.
We have spent considerable time evaluating, reviewing and revising the undergraduate curricula and post graduate programs to initiate new degree programs with solicitation from national and international academia, scientist and field experts through personal consultations, workshops, national and international conferences and video conference.
This has been a year of many new developments. We, initiated five new degree programs three in Fisheries & Aquaculture, (BS Hons., M. Phil and PhD) and two (M. Phil and PhD) in Wildlife & Ecology.
Long constrained by lack of space, our research development program is strengthened by expansion into new laboratory and office space. The completion of our research facilities at Block C, Ravi campus, for both Wildlife and Ecology and Fisheries and Aquaculture provide laboratories for research and teaching. The faculty has successfully developed research facilities and fish farms, four of the twenty farms have been stocked with fish seeds and the hatchery will in operation as soon as the water supply is ascertained. Our faculty building at Block A, Ravi Campus is also finished and will soon be functional.
However, there are many challenges that face us in the year ahead. As we adapt to changing circumstances, we maintain continuity by keeping our commitment to our mission.
The faculty has recently been affiliated with Fisheries Research & Training Institute (FRTI), Lahore, Lahore Zoo and Veterinary Research Institute (VRI), Lahore where off-campus research, teaching and practical training is provided to the student. In addition, the faculty is developing international linkages and collaboration with intra Cartel Institute, France; World Fish Center, Malaysia; American Fisheries Association; Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland; University of Glasgow, Scotland; Bangladesh Agriculture University, Mymensingh; University of Guelph, Canada, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to develop an international level fisheries & wildlife research and training programs at the University.
The department faces a number of challenges in the foreseeable future. Our success during the past year was a result of hard work on the part of dedicated faculty, staff, students, colleagues, and friends. We have every reason to be confident that the coming year will bring a renewed commitment to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
I look forward to work with the students and staff members and will continue to welcome them on behalf of the faculty of Fisheries & Wildlife.
