Department of Food & Nutrition

Introduction

Department of  Food and Nutrition started as Animal Nutrition Section which was established at College of Animal Husbandry  in 1954 under the inter- college exchange program between the Punjab University (College of Animal Husbandry) and Washington State University U.S.A. Later on the section was transferred to the Directorate of Livestock Farms in 1962. After integration with College of Veterinary Science, Lahore the nomenclature of section was changed to Department of Animal Nutrition. Since its inception, department has significantly contributed in solving field problems. It has played a pivotal role in providing the trained man power in the field of Animal Nutrition and met the demand of poultry feed industry. It has produced more than 350 M.Sc./ M.Phil students in the subjects of  Animal Nutrition. Department is well equipped with teaching Staff of 11 faculty with five Ph. D in the subject.  Department has the privilege of having an international faculty e.g. Prof. Dr. Arata Koga from Japan.

With the provision of services in the animal nutrition sector Department of Food & Nutrition at UVAS, Lahore has taken the initiative and started Postgraduate Degree Programs in Food & Human Nutrition. This initiative was necessary as the University is already engaged in producing food of animal origin in the form of milk, meat and eggs. The degree programs in Food & Nutrition are equipping the nutritional professionals with thorough understanding of the science of dietary nutrition and enabling them to serve in this very important field in the country.

COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES

a) Laboratory Analysis
Department is providing services of laboratory analysis to different government, private and other agencies.

b) Preparation of Mineral Mixture:
In Pakistan, due to mineral deficiencies animal suffer from different nutritional deficiency diseases like rickets, osteomalacia, hemoglobinuria, pica, tetany, milk fever and ultimately low productivity. To overcome this situation our department started preparation and sale of mineral mixture at commercial level. The details of  income generated from lab analysis and sale of mineral mixtures are as under.
